In 2010 our farm was fortunate to be included in an 3 year collaborative hop study with the USDA, Washington State University, the University of Vermont, and Michigan State University. This grant is directed and funded by the Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI).
This intensive research project will be studying hops and how to grow them in a sustainable environment as well as incorporating ground covers to reduce weeding and to enrich soil. Currently we have 20 different hop varieties and 8 different cover crops under study.
The hop trial varieties include: Brewer's Gold, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Cluster,
Columbus, Crystal, Fuggle, Galena, Glacier, Goldings, Hallertau, Horizon, Liberty, Mt Hood, Newport, Nugget, Perle, Saaz, Santiam, Sterling, Tettnanger, Vanguard, and Willamette.
